My OOO-28SO is structurally identical to an OM-28VR, but my OOO-28SO has 5/16" scalloped bracing, while the OM-28VR has 1/4" scalloped bracing. The lighter bracing gives the OM-28VR a richer, deeper bottom end, while the OOO-28SO is …

1/4 Inch or 5/16th Inch Bracing? - The Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum

So, while 1/4" wide braces are 20% narrower, and thus, 20% less stiff than 5/16" braces, if the 1/4" braces are as little as 2.7% taller than the 5/16" braces, they're again equal in their load bearing abilities. That means 0.0135" increase in height gives a .250" wide x .5135" tall brace the same strength as a 5/16" wide x 1/2" tall brace.

5/16 vs. 1/4 bracing vs. scalloped - The Acoustic Guitar Forum

It's all about stiffness, 5/16th " being stiffest, 1/4th " medium stiff and scalloped 1/4th " least stiff. Stiffness translates to sustain, this means that the string energy takes longer to dissipate. If energy dissipates fast most of the sound disappears in …

What is differnece between 1/4" and 5"/16" bracing?

It's not just a matter of 1/16". My observation is that 1/4" braces are also less tall than 5/16" braces. That is significant, because overall stiffness is much more greatly influenced by height than width. Stiffness is linearly proportional to thickness, while stiffness is proportional to height raised to the third power.

That is a 1/8" difference. Not only is that more than a 1/16" in thickness (5/16" vs. 1/4" as in the topic of this thread), also, taking material from the top has a considerably bigger effect on stiffness than taking material from the sides of braces.

From an engineering/structural view, 1/4" wide bracing is only slightly weaker than 5/16" wide bracing, and shouldn't really be a factor since it's well within the natural variability of the spruce bracewood itself. In other words, some 1/4" bracing will be stiffer than some 5/16" bracing, and vicey versey.

It depends on how much they are scalloped. Height is much more important than width. If you halve the width, the stiffness is half. If you halve the h
