Just hit my 40’s and thought I’d give racing a try and it was a blast. Grew up with riding BMX but only street and trails in the mid-school era. Still riding and racing enduro/trail MTB bikes etc. BMX racing looked fun so I’ve been trying it out and it’s a blast and I’m trying to figure out if I want to race 20 or 24.

Why 24?--Well, I'm much bigger now than i was in the early 90s when I stopped riding. Also figured that switching back n forth from Mtn (26) to BMX would be easier if the wheel sizes were closer.. the geometrical sweet spots would be more similar across the two genres.. as opposed to riding 20" one night, and 26" the next day.

24 will be better at rolling, its like a flywheel. (good for those who come in from a mountain bike background too) 20 is more twitchy and faster reacting. OS20 is a good inbetween if you like the lazier cruiser feeling but want it more playful while also being able to race in the 20s. (can use 1 3/8 tubes)

Choosing a gear ratio on 20" vs 24" BMX that creates the same "feel"

    https://bicycles.stackexchange.com/questions/82283/choosing-a-gear-ratio-on-20-vs-24-bmx-that-creates-the-same-feel
The chart says that is a 60, and 188.5 roll-out. On the 20" BMX I have a 45/16 which the chart gives as 54.9 and 172.3. The tire diameters are 24 for the 24 and the 20" is just under 20". So the question is how do I account for the tire diameter in the equation so that I have the same "feel" on both bikes.

level 1 OGOKB2020 · just now If you’re more comfortable on the 24” you should get that. Plenty of people ride 26” dirt jumpers and 29” mountain bikes on pump tracks. Shouldn’t be an issue. Plus you can race a 24” in Novice class. Riding it on a pump track will make you better when you do make the drive and race.

There’s r/bmxracing but it’s not as populated as this sub. 20” wont actually do much for your handling skills on bigger bikes because they’re pretty different beasts. I’d do a 24” and try out 20” on the track when you meet some nice guys who will let you borrow em. 1 level 1 ThrobZombie Op · 3y Looks like a unanimous decision, that makes it easy :)
