This mod really isn’t to provide bracing where lacking as much as duplicate as close as possible the vintage trestle bracing for tonal impact more than anything. The way the Electromatic is braced stock is a pretty small 5/8” x 5/8” square dowel tone post, which despite it’s puny design is quite effective in itself.

I will second the noticable difference between sound post and trestle bracing, my 6120ssl has trestle bracing and tvj classics and my 6119 has a tone post with hs ft, now they are not like for like in specs but are close, my 6119 is not as focused as my 6120, accoustically is a lot louder and plugged in to me feels a little warmer, its not a true comparison like this thread is …

The 5120 with No trestle bracing with standard Filtertrons, Howels and Wales on the Low end but lacks crunch and brightness in the higher end strings... The Hot Rod (w/trestle bracing) Screams and Rocks but lacks grower and bark in the low strings kind of hard to pick and choose since both are great tones. 11erick lopez 3 years ago

The short answer to all of the above is that trestle bracing is a distinctive bracing system used inside certain Gretsch hollow-body guitar models that improves tone by increasing sustain and decreasing feedback. Gretsch developed it and first used it …

Bracing

This bracing system utilises two bridge-shaped struts that spans the length of the top of the guitar and connects to the back of the guitar via the four ‘feet’, resulting in a solid structure that improves sustain and reduces feedback, whilst retaining the fundamental hollow nature of the instrument. Tressle bracing makes it more like a semi-hollow as opposed to a true hollow-body IMO. Right now, there is a lot of hype about how Fender has made improvements, so a lot of people are shying away from buying pre-fenders on the used market. They are not commanding prices as high as they were a few years ago.

The trestle brace is a bracing system that was implemented on a few select Gretsch guitars starting in 1958. The most popular models having this bracing system were the 6120 Chet Atkins model and the Anniversary model. A few 1957 models have been reported having this bracing system. The body depth of these guitars is approximately 2-7/16″.

I am fortunate enough to have two Gretsch guitars. One with Trestle Bracing (2005 Setzer Hot Rod) and one without (2008 5120 with vintage filtertrons). I have noticed a HUGE difference between the two for OBVIOUS reasons...but when plugged into my 63' Fender Bassman...the tone of the 5120 is seemingly more "Gretsch" Sounding than my Setzer Hot Rod.

The soundpost models have a bit more of a mid-focussed tone whereas the trestle braced guitars have more bass and treble and slightly less mids. It's not chalk and cheese though, and both still sound like a 6120. FWIW I haven't found either to be less susceptible to feedback. Both feedback beautifully when desired.
