    "A Giant Step For Mankind" and Jim Feurer! Suitably named "The Big Animal", the 4,000 lb. behemoth, powered by a 427 Ford Tunnel Port and 4-speed, went on to win 1D/ Hot Rod class that day, thus launching the legendary racing career of its flamboyant driver. Nicknamed after the car, Jim later became known as "Animal Jim".

    At the 2001 UDRA (United Drag Racers Association) banquet "Animal Jim" Feurer took top honors as the UDRA Pro Mod Champion. But that wasn't all for the Animal! He was also given the awards for Driver of the Year, the Mechanic of the Year, and he was also presented with the UDRA Sportsmanship Award (left) by Vice-President Chris McMahan.

    In 1987, inspired by Bill Kuhlmann's 200 mph record at Darlington, Animal put NOS on his 672" Ford hemi. Animal Jim and Bill Kuhlmann were now slated as Outlaw Pro Stocks and went on a record setting rampage from 1987 to 1989. Pro Mod was just being conceived. Animal Jim and Bill Kuhlmann in the winner's circle at Byron Dragway in May of 1987.

    The winner's circle 1988 IHRA Winternats in Darlington Just the night before winning the race pictured above, Animal Jim had won IHRA's first ever Quick 8 event in a final against Robbie Vandergriff. Crew Chief is Al Schmitt and his right-hand man is Ed Fogelsonger who had put Jim in a lot of winner's circles from 1987 to '89.
