Cross bracing or blocking? - Fine Homebuilding

    https://www.finehomebuilding.com/forum/cross-bracing-or-blocking
The solid blocking probably does a better job of aligning the joists. I can't argue with that. And I have seen lots of X bracing become loose over time. Another good point. But in an old house with loose X-bracing if you put some PL poly adhesive on the cross bracing and nail it back in place from underneath you get a very stiff floor.

residential floor framing, cross bridging vs solid blocking

Cross bracing would probably distribute a point load over one joist to adjacent joists more efficiently. Solid blocking though should also do quite well assuming it's designed properly. It's probably easier to connect the solid blocking than the wood bracing too. Metal bracing is another matter but then it's probably more expensive as well.

    https://weekendbuilds.com/floor-joist-blocking-and-bridging/
Floor joist blocking is taking solid lumber, typically the same size as your floor joists, and fastening pieces perpendicular between every pair of joists in a straight or staggered line. Cross bridging is the same idea, except that plywood or smaller pieces of lumber (2×2) are used to make an “X” between each joist in place of a solid ...

Is Blocking Required for Floor Joists? - Your Own Architect

    https://www.yourownarchitect.com/is-blocking-required-for-floor-joists/
The difference is that the cross-bracing uses two pieces of support in a diagonal shape that creates an X between the joists instead of a solid block in blocking. Because of this X shape, one brace will be forced upon and under tension while the other brace will be compressed. This can allow for floors to be sturdier and more stable. There is ...

Deck Blocking Installation. 1. Measure the distance between two joists at the ledger or beam. Joists at 12”oc should be spaced 10-1/2”, 16”oc 14-1/2” apart, and 24”oc a 22-1/2” separation. Measure and cut the blocks from the same material as the joists. Drawing cut lines using a square helps for straight square cuts.

Floor Joist Blocking - Floor Techie

Measure the distance between two parallel floor joists – and cut out a solid wood piece of the same length. The depth of the cut-out piece for blocking should also match that of the joists. Install the wooden block by hammering down a couple of nails on both sides to attach it to the two parallel joists. Next, repeat steps one and two above ...

If properly installed, solid blocking, any style of metal X-type bridging and wood X-type bridging again are equivalent in my book. The choice comes down to the details you described: which system is easiest to install, squeaks the least and holds up the longest. I think 1×4 X-type bridging is the best option for a number of reasons.

Blocking for wall framing are short pieces of 2 by 4 that you install between two joists of the basement ceiling. It's not a "building code" thing and it's not optional, you'll more than likely have to install some blocking to complete your wall framing. Let's say your ceiling joists (or floor joists, depending on how you look at it) run north ...
