Horses are prey animals, after all. They try to get away from bad situations instead of fighting like donkeys. As to the ones that enjoy it? They race. You can't take a horse that doesn't want to run or race and have any success with it. A friend of mine has horses as pets, and they just love being fat and happy in the field.

Is Horse Racing Cruel? - reddit

    https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/pquub/is_horse_racing_cruel/
Horses love racing and are treated very well. They are treated much better than other animals out there. When a race horse doesn't race anymore, usually they are sent out to stud or to riding schools. If it was cruel you would have animal activists at all racing events protesting and the gov't would crack down on the mistreatment of them.

In horse racing do the horses understand that they are racing …

I am of the opinion that they do know they are racing. Maybe not in the exact same manner we understand it, but in a way. They're intelligent beings, competition is hard-wired into pretty much every living being in existence (nature is a competition, after all) and horses do run a lot in the wild, so I'm pretty sure they'd "compete" with each other in a playful manner while growing up.

Research in animal science indicates that horses (like many herd animals) compete to maintain their standing in what they perceive as their herd. So, in terms of racing horses (the bulk of the research has been done with thoroughbred racehorses), the goal is to "convince" the horse that being ahead of the pack is how it maintains its herd position.

The best advice I can offer is to take it easy and learn as much as possible about the horses individually. A lot of tracks favors speed horses today and give the late runner little to no chance of running down a speed horse even when it has basically quit running. For instance, a Santa Anita speed horse (1st,2nd,3rd at the first 1/4 call)will ...

Myth Busters: Do Horses Actually Like Being Ridden?

    https://horserookie.com/do-horses-like-being-ridden/

On the flip side, some horses run the other way when they look up from the round bale and see a halter in hand.
