    The cells we used with a metal box were basically a rubber bladder which needed the shell to support it. If yours will hold it's shape and has a legal cap it should be OK without the shell as long as you strap it right. Rules say 12 inchs of rubber line total so most folks use a crimped end type hose with screw fittings. RM
