The new Tierp Arena opened to great fanfare in May 2011 and two months later hosted the European Drag Racing Championships for the first time. Spurred on by this initial success, the track's operators decided to add a racing circuit, which would use existing return roads, parts of the runway not used by the drag strip and a temporary pit facility.
