Dulcimer Back Braces – Doug Berch

    https://www.dougberch.com/dulcimer-braces/
This dulcimer back has three spruce cross braces and a Spanish Cedar reinforcement over the center joint. After getting the braces roughly to shape I do most of the final shaping with a paring chisel. In the photograph below you can see the paring chisel and the cute little shaving it makes.

The Dulcimer's Overall Design - Bear Meadow

    https://www.bearmeadow.com/build/design/html/dynamics-2.html
Proper bracing of the back will produce an Appalachian dulcimer which is not damped by the legs when played on the lap; it will sing with the same projection and volume as when played on a table. To return to the fretboard/top system dynamics, the top is primarily driven by the fretboard, which, in turn is driven by the strings.

Thoughts on the Nylon String Dulcimer - Stephens Lutherie

The bracing I use is an adaptation of an asymmetrical bracing scheme used by a ukulele maker. It seems to be working out well in terms of both it's structural requirements and it's flexibility in providing the desired voice to the dulcimer.

The Appalachian Dulcimer's Internal Structure

    https://www.bearmeadow.com/build/methods/body/assembly/html/internal-structures.html
The internal structure of a well designed mountain dulcimer is a little complex. First to be installed are the top linings. These are made of spruce top material, about 1/16x3/16, with the bottom inner edge rounded into a "shoe molding" shape. They are first fitted and cut to shape, then glued and clamped into place with spring clothespins.

Building a Dulcimer | Preston Woodruff

The back and top of the dulcimer are bookmatched thin sheets of cherry braced to counter string tension. Here, the sides and back are glued up. "Inlays and fretwire" [Preston Woodruff's hand holding fretwire over an inlaid fingerboard] The inlays are ebony to match the bird-shaped soundholes on the dulcimer's top.

This process takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Above: The wood is carefully bent and dried in a simple jig. I use a Hair Dryer to speed up the drying and it produces much less spring-back this way. The first parts ready for assembly. Next, I cut out the bottom board. It is 1/8″ thick African Mahogany.

Drill parallel stock, not tapered. Then sand the tapers in with a table or spindle sander or even just a handheld belt sander flipped on it's back. Your experience with a run-away router is exactly why I will never own one or use it for building delicate things like dulcimers. Edited September 7, 2021 by NoterMan Quote 3 weeks later... The entire top of the dulcimer is free to vibrate independent of the fretboard since the fretboard is held above it on posts from below. The top is western red cedar and is thinner than is typical for my dulcimers, about 0.100 inch. It is braced from below with a modified X-braced pattern. The strings terminate at the end block.
