Optimum time to arrive is 30 seconds into the riders’ minute. For example, if you are riding on minute 5, you want to arrive at the checkpoint at 5 minutes 30 seconds. Penalty seconds are calculated from the 30-second mark of your assigned minute. If you are on minute 5 and arrive at 7:09 you receive 99 penalty seconds.

You can ride enduros without timekeeping. There is no rule that says you have to have a clock, odometer, computer, roll chart, whatever, on your handlebars. If you want the fun of just paying for a real challenging trail ride, then by all means enter an enduro and just ride. And I will forever defend your right to do just that.

Early, late, and on time: If you are early to a check, you obtain two points for the first minute early, 5 (!) points for each minute after that. In other words, if you're one minute early, you get two points. Two minutes early = 7 points, three minutes early, 12 points. Being early, a.k.a. "burning a check," is bad juju!

This brings us to the National Enduro format of today. Go as fast as humanly possible while in the test and then transfer to the next test section. In a Sprint Enduro, there are typically no transfer sections. In a National Enduro Format, a transfer section could be half a mile long or it could be a nice 5 mile jaunt through the woods.

Enduro clubs often choose 24 mph because it's a tough speed to maintain in the woods and the math is easier. Every 15 seconds equates to one-tenth of a mile. Riding one mile at 24 mph takes 2.5 minutes. Other common speed averages are 18 mph (0.3 miles per minute) and 30 mph (a half mile per minute), for the same mathematical reasons.
