    Fred DeSarro was the 1972 and 1976 Winston Racing Series Modified track champion at Stafford. His biggest wins were the 1970 Stafford 200, which sewed up the 1970 NASACR National Modified Championship with and the Inaugural Spring Sizzler® in April of 1972.

    Fred DeSarro raced bikes as a youth, then moved on to racing boats. When he turned 16, he graduated to stock cars. He quickly established himself at the Waterford-New London track, then moved on to the Norwood Arena. In 1970, DeSarro captured the NASCAR National Modified Championship, driving the Kozella “Woodchopper” #15.

    Like yesterday’s photo, this is an image of Fred DeSarro in the legendary Boehler “Ole Blue” coupe. He had just won that first Spring Sizzler in 1972 and would go on to be Stafford’s track champion. It was a happy day, but sadness would follow. Fred was killed in a horrible crash at Thompson (CT) Speedway six years later.
