J-45 Bracing Question - Gibson Acoustic - Gibson Brands …

The braces in your J-45's are similar to the back braces in other modern slope-J models, such as the SJ. I have both modern and vintage mahogany slope-J's. My modern 1943 SJ re-issue is a superb guitar, but the completely original one-owner 1950 J-45 I bought earlier this year has one big advantage over it: 70-year-old wood.

The J-45 True Vintage has the same top bracing as the modern Advanced Jumbo. The back bracing, however, is taller and thinner, while the AJ's is low and wide. Red 333 I was checking today ...the bracing on the back of the AJ is lower and wider with rounded tops. All the others have tall thin pointed tops to the back braces. Interesting. Red 333

Late in that year, Gibson abandoned the round-shouldered dreadnought shape and gave the J-45 a Martin-style square-shouldered body, along with a longer, 25.5″ scale length. The assault on the J-45 continued in 1970 with the tone-killing double-X bracing pattern (although Gibson did do away with the height-adjustable saddle).

Differences in Bracing patterns??? - Gibson Brands Forums

The J-45 TV also sounds different from the Southern Jumbo TV, and they have different back bracing patterns from one another as well, as well. Tops are braced the same (though the J-45 is Red Spruce, and the SJ is Sitka). My Legend J-45 has super light back bracing, and it's the most resonant of all, so there has to be something to it. Bracing on all Gibson Acoustics - Gibson Brands Forums

Gibson acoustic does not shift the bracing. That is a technique used by Martin. We have a standard X Brace which is found on the J-45, Hummingbird and many others. The J-35 has what we call a 30's bracing pattern like the AJ. This makes for a longer bridge plate and brings out a greater dynamic range ( more mids and a little more volume)

Posted March 25, 2010. Different manufacturers use the terms 'light' and medium' for different gauges of strings. Also the choice of string gauge varies greatly from person to person. I use Ernie Ball Earthwood Bronze 12 to 54 ('Medium Light') most of the time, but I do use 13-56 ('Medium') on one guitar.
