Bracing - gretschguitars.com

"ML" Bracing. Co-developed by legends of the modern Gretsch legacy, Masao Terada and Mike Lewis, “ML” Bracing is essentially half of our Trestle Bracing – with the two ‘feet’ under the bridge area but not by the neck block. This results in a ‘best of both worlds’ scenario, give the huge, open tone of Parallel Bracing, combined with the feedback-busting, sustain inducing ...

Gretsch developed it and first used it in the late 1950s. Trestle bracing is a special extra. Most Gretsch hollow-body guitars and basses don’t have it. Rather, most Gretsch hollow-body instruments use a simpler internal support method called sound-post bracing, in which a vertical wooden dowel located directly under the bridge connects the ...

As it goes with modern gretsch guitars, say mid 90s to now.. we have had the tone post. Then when Mike Lewis scanned a 59' gretsch, there began a move to return to the 1959 trestle style of bracing.. the latest design is the ML bracing you see in the photo above which is a stylized version of the trestle bracing.

The most popular models having this bracing system were the 6120 Chet Atkins model and the Anniversary model. A few 1957 models have been reported having this bracing system. The body depth of these guitars is approximately 2-7/16″.

Finally, regarding trestle bracing, Tommy pretty much nailed it. My opinion is that trestle bracing adds a bit more mass between the front and back of the guitar which helps keep the feedback down a bit. Gretsch retired trestle bracing in the early 60's (I think because of QC problems in ceeping the wood and patterns consistent.)

3,788. Dec 11, 2010. #9. I've owned and gigged with 6120s with and without the trestle bracing. I like both! The soundpost models have a bit more of a mid-focussed tone whereas the trestle braced guitars have more bass and treble and slightly less mids. It's not chalk and cheese though, and both still sound like a 6120.

With its slightly larger body (430mm wide as opposed to the 400mm of our other three models), it also has a longer scale length and uses the quite robust Trestle-style bracing, no doubt contributing to its heavier- than-the-6120 weight. Numerous new features were introduced by Gretsch in 1958, not least the Filter'Tron humbuckers, here ...
