    Heightmaps tend to suffer from discontinuities at cell boundaries, as well as suffering from being on a grid. As you move over them, the normals will change wildly, creating a rather rough physics experience. In particular, it's rather hard to get smooth slopes and hills in any direction not on a 45° angle increment against the grid.
