Don't quote me on this but I think most racing axes are heavy heads on short handles because the logs they are bucking using that axe are up on a stand. Being that the axe has a shorter distance to fall, it needs a very heavy head to generate the force equal to or exceeding that of a 3.5# head on a 36" haft.
