If the revs aren't right on during the downshift it's like it just goes into neutral instead of completing the shift. I do use the clutch when I downshift in the MX-5 but it was very forgiving when downshifting as long as I wasn't going too fast. Maybe this car requires heel-toe to drive properly. What has certainly helped me are two setup that were posted on the iRacing forum. One for Watkins Glen, and one for Spa. The Watkins Glen setup is quite soft. The rear is relatively loose, but this results in the front end being very grippy. This is a great setup for tracks with several slow corners that depend on front-end grip.

When iRacing was released back in 2008, the Solstice was meant to be the rookie car. Then Pontiac died (RIP I <3 my G8) and iRacing was left supporting a car from a defunct brand. Then the MX-5 came in to replace the Solstice. The Solstice was out-of-service for a few years until around 2015 or so they added the car to the Production Car Challenge.

Indy Pro 2000 PM-18. You're totally right - left foot braking is faster in iRacing, MX-5, skippy, Radical, V8 supercar. with that said, I go for immersion so I LIKE to heel-toe for realworld practice. The Mustang for example, you pretty much have to heel-toe. IRL, many transmissions make you use the clutch, MX-5, Skippy for example.
