although there are kits for the FMX i dont think they are worth souping up considering the other choices out there. for daily driving i think you will be a-okay. i'm still debating if i should keep mine or not. its heavy and has a lot of internal drag (this i have heard) but some guys around here think they are pretty good. i just realized you stated an early ford. okay, that i …

Here is some input on the FMX. I just had my FMX rebuilt for my 70 mach 1. Its original behind a mildly built 351. I installed a TCI torque ~2400 stall converter. The transmission shop installed a trans go shift kit, Kolen clutch plates, kevlar bands, and changed out the first gear from a T 400 tans.

If you have to have a stronger trans, then a C-6 is the way to go. The C-6 is pretty bulletproof in almost any application. Very hard trans to break. Swapping a few parts w/ a later model E4OD trans will also give a C-6 very nice gear ratios. You would probably be best to consider the FMX a boat anchor and convert to one of the other transmissions.

The FMX often gets a bad wrap because of its weight, and it's hard to find people that know the right way to work on them. If put together right, they're actually a solid transmission. The downsides are they're heavy, a little more difficult to get parts for than a C4 or C6, and they're expensive to work on. Upsides are they're tough, and have ...

The only reason I stopped towing with it was that usually the car and trailer were heavier than the Ranchero, so I had brake issues. A good transmission in my book. Its hard to find parts for and harder to find a guy that can build it. Call AAMCO and tell them you have a FMX. desertratrodder, May 7, 2006.

Drag racing: manual shifting an FMX - FordTransmissionForum

Will it damage my transmission? drag racing starting in 1st, then at 6200-6500 rpms shifting into 2nd and then into D with a stock transmission? Also, there are NOT ratchet shifters available for FMXs, and the risk of accidentally go past D into N is present. that could cause an accidental overrev to the engine.

In stock trim, an FMX is definitely a stronger box. It's basically a truck transmission. It's also heavier, with it's cast-iron main case. …

Ford FMX transmission - Charlie Tranny

Ford FMX transmission. FMX. Was used 1968-81 in many Ford products. This is an hydraulically controlled rear wheel drive transmission. It has a cast iron case and an aluminum bell housing and extension housing. It is similar in appearance to the Fordomatic that was used since 1951 and the Borg-Warner BW8 and BW12, but almost none of the parts are interchangeable. 1968 …

FMX-stronger, heavier, larger bellhousing, uses more HP, hard to break C4-weaker, lighter, smaller bellhousing, uses less HP,easier to break In Australia, FMXs copped a floggin for decades, and with the 351C/FMX combo.....the valves will go long before the FMX. therefore.....for drag racing seriously, get a superbuiltup C4
