Jackson Harness Raceway was founded in the post World War II era by industrialist Leon Slavin. Many people in attendance on opening day could remember the horse-and-buggy era. Sixty years later, the track was still going in the age of Millennials, people who anticipate the takeover of driverless cars.

Jackson Raceway was a five half mile harness track located at the Jackson Fairgrounds, a few blocks north of the town of Jackson. It had an open air grandstand, used primarily for summer racing. The grandstand could seat 6,500. There was parking for 1,000 cars. The track featured the Sulky Lounge which could accommodate 100 diners.

Situated just south of Lansing, Jackson Harness Raceway opened on May 28, 1948 and had its final day of racing July 19, 2008. Since then it has only played host to a few motorcycle and snowboard races. In partnering with the Jackson parks system, the Fairgrounds board decided to build an entire new venue in place of the track.

Jackson Harness Raceway opened in 1948. Co-organizer Mike Way expected 2,000 to 3,000 to attend the free farewell event. Instead, he estimates 6,000 to 7,000 showed up and came to life for the dozen two-lap races. “The roar of that crowd is what I’m going to remember forever. That was so loud, I was taken aback,” Way said.
