Martin somehow became "officially" aware that their production designs had changed over the decades and decided to offer some models that recreated those older ones a little more accurately. Done right, as on the HD-28V with both forward-shifted and scalloped braces, and the results can be awesome. ~ Herb--2000 D-15 2002 HD-28V

Since the bracing is not cut, the overall panel will be heavy, so this affects the guitar’s partial resonance and volume. Therefore, the Martin guitar using this bracing needs more strength to play.

One helpful guideline is Gore's 'two degree rule'. He finds that on 'good' guitars the bridge tends to rotate forward by about two degrees under string tension. Much less than that suggests that the bracing is stiffer than it needs to be, …

The regular "X-bracing" held until this very day but you can still get many Martin guitars with scalloped bracing, it just costs more but what a difference in tone! Note, forward-shifted bracing usually has more bass, the rear-shifted bracing (moved down only an inch on the top) started around 1939 and continued until around 1946 and has more of a sparkle.

Forward Shifted X Bracing. The way I understand the story is... The collectors dream guitar is a pre-war Martin. These are guitars made before WWII. Back then, Martin had the X brace, which is behind the front of the guitar, closer to the soundhole. This gave the guitars a distinctive sound. The problem was, because there was less bracing under the belly of the guitar, over time the …

This same principal applies to forward shifted instruments. As I mentioned in a previous Martin guitar comparison article, the standard position for the center of the 'X' (The point where the two Cross braces meet) is 1.5" below the soundhole. When a guitar is "forward shifted" this means that the center of this X is moved a half an inch closer to the soundhole.

If you have the bread, you can get a rear-shifted hand carved scalloped braced D-28 by ordering a Martin D-28 "1941 Authentic" and if you like the front-shifted sound, the D-28 "1937 Authentic" will fit your bill. This stuff is mucho money though but they sure sound great. Put together with retro hot hide glue, the sound is quite mesmerizing.
