    Over the next 30 years, the fairgrounds would enjoy the usual open wheel racing but after 1939 they decided to reconfigure the track to a 1/2 mile dirt track. Soon after WWII started and racing was ceased. The moment the ban was lifted, racing resumed and through the 50s the stock cars became a draw card.

    Because both races ran within a 48 to 72 hour period of each other, this took a toll on the drivers and their race cars. It all began on Monday afternoon, September 6, 1965. It was originally scheduled as a 200-mile event, so it was aptly named, the Northstar 400. It was by far the richest prize of the year, with a total purse exceeding $10,000.

Senneker started on the pole but lost the lead to Tom Maier, driving a 1973 Camaro.
