Born in April 1929, into a family of racing enthusiasts, his passion for driving was fueled by his father, who ran a garage near the Brooklands circuit in Farnham, Surrey where they modified and primed cars and motorcycles for racing.

He his competition début driving his 1934 Riley Ulster Imp, winning the 1,100 c.c. sports car class at the Brighton Speed Trials on 2 September 1950.
