National Oval Track Racing Association (NOTRA)
One of the first forms of the sport was “rag racing” where the handler would hand slip the dog and the dog would run to a partner waving a white rag. Later, like greyhounds, whippets ran a mechanical lure. Today, whippets run straight track (in the US through NAWRA, WRA or CWA), oval (NOTRA) or lure course (AKC, ASFA).

NOTRA Oval Track Racer (OTR) non-championship title program. NOTRA began this non-championship awards program in 2001. The Oval Track Racer (OTR) program is intended to identify & rank those sound, clean-running Whippets that compete well, but for most of whom the Oval Racing Championship (ORC) may be out of reach.

NOTRA was founded by David Rosenstock in 1975 and the first two meets (Aug 3 & Dec 6, 1975) were hosted by the Northern California Whippet Club. In 1983, The Stampede City Whippet Club of Calgary, AB, Canada hosted the first NOTRA meet to feature other breeds - Afghans, Borzoi and Greyhounds joined the Whippets.

Whippet SORC. The Supreme Racing Championship is earned by a small minority of racng dogs. In each race meet, the top dog (s) receive National ORC points (the number of points is dependant upon the number of racers. A Whippet attains the title of Supreme Race Champion by earning 50 National Championship Points; a bitch must earn 30 National Championship Points.
