Just before the US entered World War 1, Packard built two special racing cars, both with V12 engines specially designed for aviation use. Both were driven by Ralph DePalma , the smaller one with a 299 cu. in. engine to successes in 1917 and 1918, and then to sixth at Indianapolis in 1919.
