I **love** my ancient short track cam, but its a bit rowdy for a 396 and gives you 7500 rpm capability ( 7200 in my 440). Only 11" Hg at idle, that would be 9 -10 in a 400" mill. If you go with longer valves etc with the roller, be CAUTIOUS about geometry. ALSO, you need to put extra long studs in the exhaust bosses in those heads.

The smallest BBC summit racing brand cam will do the trick. I have run stock springs with it and it works ok. Specs are 276/280 advertised, 208/218 at 0.050", 112 lsa, and 0.475"/0.500" lift. Original 396/325 The block was decked without removing the numbers and bored .030. It received a stroker kit (4.00) with H-beam rods, Keith Black pistons. Heads got extensive port matching work and new larger SS valves cut to unshroud. Basic stock aluminum intake and electronic ignition.

stock manifolds, stock converter, and 3.08 gears needs a small cam. The biggest cam I would use would be a compcam 260H. 260/260 advertised 212/212 at 0.050". this cam will work with the stock valve train. A 252H would be good also. a compcam deh255 would be another good choice. and would work with the stock springs.
