    having proper gearing to provide real training on the road is what makes the road good to train on. if you are running a 2x drivetrain with slicks you will be spun out too fast on flats. my suggestion would be to pick up a cheap CX bike. you can get em for less than $1000 for sure, and used ones pop up at the end of CX season.
