While Ray Tracing has worked on Linux for a long time with NVIDIA, the situation with Mesa+AMD is still being worked out but the good news is that it's all finally coming together. Developer Bas Nieuwenhuizen wrote in a new blog post about the current situation noting that after over 9 months of work, that they're now seeing games working.

Ray Tracing is on Linux yes, has been for a long time but as always, it depends on per-app support and currently NVIDIA-only. Work is underway to add in vendor-neutral extensions into Vulkan to allow Ray Tracing across NVIDIA/AMD/Intel. 4 Continue this thread 1.5k Posted by u/pdp10 2 months ago hardware

Native Linux games can use all ray tracing features. Windows games running in Wine have limited support for now, but it's enough to get some games running. 3 level 1 · 9 mo. ago · edited 9 mo. ago Well, native Linux games that use Vulkan ray tracing will work, but I don't think there are any (metro exodus).

You have two options for ray tracing on Linux. The Quake II RTX demo, and Wolfenstein Youngblood. No Direct X 12 game is likely to work with ray tracing in Wine/Proton any time soon. Wolfenstein Youngblood works because it's Vulkan, and doesn't have to use vkd3d. That said, a 3060 Ti isn't going to be very good as a Ray Tracing GPU.

VKD3D-Proton begins work to support DirectX Raytracing on Linux

Since The Khronos Group formally released the cross-vendor Vulkan Ray Tracing specification back in November it makes it all possible. Hooking up Ray Tracing for VKD3D-Proton, it will be using those new extensions. Having DirectX Raytracing working on Linux for Windows games in Proton sure does sound pretty big.

The only thing you could use is raytracing via compute shader. For example a custom Minecraft mod added this feature to its shader options (I'm not sure though if it's still early access but older versions worked quite well already). 1 level 2 · 1 yr. ago RTX is a brand name. The catches for RT support on Linux are as follows; AMD support is lack luster, and slow. DX12 through Proton and WINE currently do not fully support ray tracing. You can track progress on VKD3D at their github. Any Vulkan RT should work on Linux as native. 2 Reply Share ReportSaveFollow level 1 · 7 mo. ago

Getting Started — RayTracing documentation

This is in fact really simple: by tracing a large number of rays, with the number of rays at y and θ being proportionnal to the intensity, one can obtain the intensity profile by plotting the histogram of rays reaching a given height at the image plane. Rays are small classes that return a Ray that satisfies the condition of the class.
