In the 1971 Garden State Stakes, Riva Ridge beat Numbered Account, the champion 2-year-old filly of 1971, and Key to the Mint, who would become his archrival at 3. On Sept. 20, 1972, the $28,000 Stymie Handicap at Belmont Park featured the last two winners of the Kentucky Derby.
