From the age of 15, following a number of other dinghy classes such as laser and 29er, I began to set my sights onto the world of yacht racing, and more specifically, double handed and solo offshore racing. In 2009, at the age of 18, i completed my first 2-handed season, including the infamous Rolex Fastnet Race, with my farther as co-skipper.

Taking on solo from Sam Matson on Vimeo. On Friday 1 st November the squad took part in the first solo race of the Artemis Offshore Academy race series. The forecast showed a variable 15 knots of breeze with potential for high gusts, before conditions finally ( after a lot of rain) settled in the west and moderated.

This weekend’s conditions provided a perfect play ground to get out on the water and practice some downwind sailing. Despite the occasional heavy rain, the ever changing conditions allowed us to practice each manoeuvre in a range of wind strengths from 8-30 knots!

I remember once seeing a photograph of Robin Knox-Johnston taking a sight with his sextant in the Bass Strait - this was during his epic solo round the world race in 1968/1969 (in the book “A World of My Own”, 1969), no GPS in those days! Really does make you appreciate the skill and courage of the people racing and sailing in those days.
