To David Abbott (Christchurch, NZ) by 2002, and raced in the F5000 Tasman Revival regularly from 2003 to 2008, when Abbott moved over to his newly rebuilt HU2. The largest number of Formula 5000’s on the grid in Australia in the 1970’s is reported to be 17. At the 2006 VHRR Historic Sandown motor races the number was 19! This is Sandown meet was dubbed as the “Return of the Thunder”, and it was, not only with the 5000’s but also with the large Group C & A Touring Car grid.

The 18th version of the Historic Sandown meeting was held on 6-8 November. About three years ago the meeting was struggling to attract 300 entries – this was the number for Friday practise this year! For the weekend it was record entry levels for a car race meeting at Sandown – 425.

With a total of 34 closely matched cars on the grid the races were looking good. Race 1 Both Ben Read and Mark Johnson made great starts as did Chris Ralph, Mark Forgie, Daren Hill, John Smallman and Russell Pilven. With such first lap intensity and a close bunched field, the inevitable happened as the group hurtled into Dandenong Rd Corner.
