Scalloped Bracing. A technique used by luthiers for shaping the braces mounted to the underside of an acoustic guitar’s top, typically by shaving away wood in the middle of the brace. Martin used this technique for their famous vintage “Pre-war” guitars built prior to 1944.

It was a feature found on Martin guitars made during the height of the folk revival of the 1960s & "70s. Here's the classic scalloped brace design of a 1943 D-18: Notice the scooped out areas of the lower diagonal braces and the lower end of the big cross braces. All the upper braces, from the intersection of the "X" to the neck, are identical.

It was a 1966 D-28 that has been retopped with an Adirondack spruce top and pre-war style bracing, like they use on the Authentics, and it was in fact braced by a retired Martin employee. That would put the HD-28 sort of in the middle between that fullness and echo of the forward-shifted bracing, and the clear, more-fundamental sound of the D-28.
