Larry Smith was the designer of the Scarab line. He built some under his own name that were more custom than the production line of Wellcraft. It is true that they somewhat resemble the flatdeck Cigs. People have asked me if mine is a Cig more than once. I think it was just the style back then with the long flat decks.

During the 1979 season Jeff Brown had Larry Smith build him an identical Team Scarab 9 Meter, but a light weight Kevlar 49 built "Pure Insanity" P-38 (II) and after racing the two boats managed to become The National Overall Production Class Champion of 1979.
