I use raytrace shadows and under raytrace shadow attributes... the light radius is set to 1, shadow rays are set to 16 as are the ray depth limit... this will give you more of a gradient effect on the shadow as opposed to just a solid shadow and i have not seen major render time adjustment unless there are a lot of lights in the scene....

To soften the edges of a raytrace shadow, increase the light radius. Initially, this will decrease the overall quality of the shadow, which you can compensate for by increasing the number of shadow rays. Don't be afraid to increase this to 10 or 20 or more - it will definitely give you a render-time hit, but that's how it's done.
