On the original XBox, I believe you could forfeit the race just before striking a wall. If done correctly, the clock will not stop, and the point where you hit the wall is listed as your final time. Regarding getting better at swoop racing, a recent trick I found in the original KOTOR is that you go faster without hitting the final engine shift.

I was able to beat all the swoop tracks. Just keep practicing and save before you do so you dont lose credits. You basically have to hit 9/10 speed boosts and shift at the perfect time else you actually slow from im proper shifting and dont hit any obstacles.
