The trestle brace is a bracing system that was implemented on a few select Gretsch guitars starting in 1958. The most popular models having this bracing system were the 6120 Chet Atkins model and the Anniversary model. A few 1957 models have been reported having this bracing system. The body depth of these guitars is approximately 2-7/16″.

The trestles do deaden the sound when played acoustically. But when plugged in and gigged or recorded with, all the best Gretsch sounds I've gotten are from trestled models, starting with a 59 6120. The feedback is easy to control with the trestled ones and it's not a squeal but a nice rumble.

Gretsch retired trestle bracing in the early 60's (I think because of QC problems in ceeping the wood and patterns consistent.) It was reintroduced with the first FMIC Setzers. If you held me to it, I could probably not hear the difference between sound-post bracing and trestle bracing batotman Members 28.5k Author Members Posted August 14, 2005

ML bracing is sort of a half-trestle. Similar to trestles but without the upper legs. In effect, it is dual sound posts with stiffeners along part of the parallel braces. So from hollow to solid there is. Sort of non-linear continuum: 1. Hollow with bracing 2. Hollow, bracing, soundpost - MANY sub-variations on a soundpost 3. ML bracing 4. Trestle

The soundpost models have a bit more of a mid-focussed tone whereas the trestle braced guitars have more bass and treble and slightly less mids. It's not chalk and cheese though, and both still sound like a 6120. FWIW I haven't found either to be less susceptible to feedback. Both feedback beautifully when desired.
