OEM Dana housings and 3rd members are larger, stronger but heavier. An OEM 9" rear housing is lighter and has the advantage of a removable 3rd member for easy gear changes. The 9" housing and 3rd member can be made strong enough for just about any application but needs a spool for higher power applications. You can squeeze it, shake it, beat it ...

I've read a ton of mixed opinions about the truetrac. It's actually kind of odd: some people beat the hell out of them on the dragstrip with 600rwhp, slicks, clutch dumps, etc, and say the TT is taking everything and asking for more. Other people break them on their first trip to the strip with 400 rwhp and drag radials.

Tue, 2007-01-30 11:52. The Detroit Truetrac performs like an open differential under normal driving conditions and automatically transfers torque to the wheel with better traction when ground conditions call for it. On the track, Truetrac differentials offer the ability for cars to launch harder. Those that do more than travel in a straight line when racing can rely on the differential to open during cornering keeping power going to the traction wheel, while allowing for differences in wheel speed during the turns.

Will a Detroit Trutrac handle 1000 hp without problem??

Only show this user. I have been looking to convert to a Detroit truetrac for my 3800 lb Chevelle. It is a 98% street car that sees the strip about 1-2 times a year and I would like to road race next year. I need a 33 spine carrier for a 3.08 gear that will not only turn good, but put 1000 hp/900 ftlb to the ground without problem.

The Detroit TrueTrac was the first helical gear (no clutches) differential ever introduced into the aftermarket as an Eaton brand. In short, the patented design of the parallel axis planetary helical gears provides a quiet, automatic splitting of torque.

There's a lot to like about the Truetrac. One more thing you might want to take into consideration though, is that they were supposedly not recommended for drag racing. Something to do with the gears' ability to handle shock loads, IIRC. That might be …

Talk to me about the TrueTrac with slicks and big power....

    https://www.svtperformance.com/threads/talk-to-me-about-the-truetrac-with-slicks-and-big-power.764347/
The TrueTrac is not recommended for drag racing, expecially with a stick car. The helical gear set up in a 8.8 differential does not allow sufficient gear contact surface area to withstand shock loads of repeated clutch dumps with slicks!
