It was built for a horse racing track, such as the Milwaukee Mile. Although sanctioned races weren’t held until 1914, one automobile race was held in 1901. The race was not good because of the wind. But starting in 1961 the first Knoxville Nationals was won by Roy Robbins. Now the Nationals are sanctioned by the World of Outlaws.

1872 Seattle Race Course opens – Pari-mutuel wagering formally begins. 1889 State Constitution ratified – lotteries (games of chance) prohibited. 1901 Spokane Race Track opens. 1902 Meadows Race Track (King County) opens – Pari-mutuel wagering operated at track. 1909 Widespread bookmaking led to a prohibition of horse racing.
