Wondering what RPM to shift at when drag racing

If the cam has been changed than try about 500 below the max advertised rpm of the cam (i.e. if it says 1500-6500 than try shifting at 6000) I have had good luck (on a stock 5.0) shifting at 5000 1-2, and 5200 2-3/3-4. In my fastback I'd turn it 5500 1-2, and 5800 2-3/3-4. With the new motor in the 5.0 I buzz the motor 6000 1-2 and 6200 2-3/3-4

When you are racing, keep the engine in it's powerband for one. I don't own a WRX, but I know you must keep it at atleast 4,000rpm to make any good power. Practice speed shifting at first, which is only lifting off the gas enough so that the engine doesn't bounce of the rev limiter during the shift. When you get better at shifting, don't lift ...

From 2nd to 3rd you now only need about 280 lb-ft, so you actually want to shift around 6500 rpm. This is where the current torque is about 230, since when you multiply by 2.16/1.52 you get pretty close to your peak torque. From 3rd to 4th, the difference is a bit less, so you'll shift around 6400 in a stock vehicle.

Next, in 2nd gear, I tried to shift to 3rd gear at 5k but I pushed in the clutch while my foot was still on throttle and it revved all the way to redline and I couldn't shift into 3rd gear! It was horrible. Anyways, my first question is, in a drag race, what RPM should I shift at in each gear? Is it different for every gear(1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th)?

For the duration of the drag race your aim is to keep the engine in the power band and maintain traction. If you get your car tested on a rolling road the resulting graph will show where this power band is. For most cars the power will start to tail off again about 1000-2000 rpm before the red line, so this is the logical place to change gear.

A dual plain intake will only flow good to about 6500 rpm's and if your converter is 6000 that's only a 500 rpm difference if your converter stalls that high. Thats way over the tq curve of where you motor should be making good power. In this case I don't think bigger is better.

E.g., if peak power is 600HP @ 7,000 RPM and you shift at 7,600 where the power has dropped to 560, the RPM after the shift should be to whatever RPM gives you 560 HP. If after the shift you are at 570 HP, you need to drop your shift point a bit. If after the shift, you are at 540, you need to raise it.
