I gaurantee you the optimal shift point for THAT car is what I posted above: 1st --> 2nd = 6595 rpms 2nd --> 3rd = 5643 rpms 3rd --> 4th = 5595 rpms 4th --> 5th = 4915 rpms That is no where close to 4000 - 4200 rpms. It is quite possible that the "ideal" shift point is beyond redline. That is the case with my turbo car.

If the cam has been changed than try about 500 below the max advertised rpm of the cam (i.e. if it says 1500-6500 than try shifting at 6000) I have had good luck (on a stock 5.0) shifting at 5000 1-2, and 5200 2-3/3-4. I shift at 5000 in all gears (when racing). I would probably run a little quicker in the 1/4 if I ran 2nd & 3rd to 5200/5300. You need your torque off the line to get you moving then you need your horsepower once you have momentum. It's all about staying in your powerband and without a dyno you're just guessing at what it is, like me.

ericnova72. General rule of thumb for drag strip is shifting 400-500 rpm above your peak horsepower point so that the car "recovers" well from the rpm drop, but every car is different. Some with 3-speed autos like a slightly lower rpm shift to second, but a slightly higher rpm shift into high gear.

A dual plain intake will only flow good to about 6500 rpm's and if your converter is 6000 that's only a 500 rpm difference if your converter stalls that high.

It really depends on how old you are. If your under 21 shift at 6000. If your 22-25 shift at 4700. 25-30 shift at 3500 and anyone over 30 shift at 3000. Of course these are numbers for driving to work etc. If you street racing or drag racing every should shift at 7K
