In this century, some form of scalloped bracing is found on most Martin guitars. Today, only the higher-end Martins have their braces scalloped by hand after the bracing has been glued to the soundboard. Any scalloping done on Martins in the X Series, Road Series, 15 Series, 16 Series, and 17 Series are shaped by machines prior to installation.

This practice of only using straight braces continued until 1977 when Martin released the HD-28, a dreadnought guitar that featured braces scalloped similar to those in the found in the Pre-War, "Golden Era" instruments.

Both of the 16 series 12 strings are listed with scalloped 1 style bracing. The rest of Martin's 12's including the J15 and DM are specifically not scalloped. I think the description is a little misleading. The X brace will not be scalloped on a 12 string.

The HD-35 however, has 1/4″ scalloped and that is THE echoiest, most intense undertone resonance of the lot. I just played a Custom Shop Jumbo today at Maury’s Music, it was basically ordered as an OM-28 in the Jumbo body size, but forward-shifted, scalloped 1/4″ bracing like the HD-35. Mammoth undertone.

1974 D35 with herringbone binding and scalloped bracing

The HD-35 wasn't introduced until 1978. If this one is marked D-35, and Martin confirmed that, then the herringbone and scalloping are almost certainly aftermarket. The could could have even been retopped later. Photos would help, but we know it's not in the original configuration. Share this topic with: Share
