#2 · Jul 4, 2013 No reason for a stat in a drag car but it doesnt hurt anything to have one either.I use restrictors. But anyway 200-205 isnt hot No tstat just lets you circulate water until the temp gets to what you want. Save Reply Graphic Man Wild Addiction Joined Apr 26, 2010 2,236 Posts #3 · Jul 4, 2013

With that said, some guys will run no thermostat but use an engine oil heater, they are trying to keep the heads as cold as possible for maximum cylinder filling while the bottom end is warm enough to oil efficiently. Bore wear graph goes near vertical once you go below 160°. I don't like having to rebuild my stuff every year.

Is it better to run a thermostat on a dragcar. - Speed-Talk

But, according to studies made 50 years ago, running coolant temp of 100 degrees will make the rings wear 40 times faster than when coolant temps are 160 degrees or above. The hotter the coolant, the less wear. (I used to have the book that SAE referenced this but don't know where it is today.) Temp over 160 is critical to longevity.

Even though you can't hear detonation on most race engines, your time slip will reflect it. If you find yourself saying "my car ran 3 to 4 off for no reason" this may be your answer.

In pro-stock a stone-cold engine is best. We have also dyno tested literally hundreds of sportsman engines, and it appears that a coolant temp. of around 120 degrees at the start of a run is ideal. I recognize that pro-stock teams have the luxury of 90 minutes between runs and that it is tough for a sportsman racer to keep the engine cool ...

Thermostats To complete your high performance coolant system, PitStopUSA.com recommends the use of a low-temp thermostat. Low-temp thermostats improve performance in two ways: first by inducing less heat into the intake air and second by reducing the engines tendency to detonate. Use a restrictor in the flow to the radiator. Back in flathead days a freeze plug in the upper hoses with a 5/8-3/4 hole was the usual fix. Cheap to try ,run to cold smaller hole or pop for the stat housing. JohnEvans, Jul 29, 2010 SHARE POST #3 Model A John Member from wichita ks I don't use a thermostat in my race engine.
