Top racing whippets can achieve speeds of up to almost 40 MPH over the 200 yard distance, with the weekend warriors and couch potato hounds not that far behind them.

In straight racing, Whippets break out of starting boxes wearing muzzles and numbered blankets. They run a distance between 150 to 200 yards (200 yards is most common), and the first one over the finish line is the winner. They run in groups of five or six dogs. The blankets are colored and numbered to help determine placements at the finish.
