Extending Whisker Poles - Sail Magazine

Apr 20, 2009. A standard spinnaker pole is as long as the J measurement on your boat – that is, the distance from the base of the mast to the forestay chainplate. This is purely a racing rule requirement; longer poles are penalized under PHRF rules. If you’re cruising, your whisker pole can be any length you like.

As for the maximum length of the whisker pole, I believe it is solely a PHRF matter. It isn''t in the Racing Rules of Sailing. We have just cleaned up our PHRF regulations to allow setting the pole on the same side as the main boom and the length is limited to 80% of the LP of your largest genoa.

Whisker Pole Length Question - Sailboat Owners Forums

I've always read that a whisker pole should be 100% the length of the foot of the jib. But according to another source (an article by Art Bandy in the book "The New Book of Sail Trim"), he says the pole should be the length of the foot but never less then 1.25 of the J measurement. The foot of my jib is 10.5', J is 9', so 1.25 * J = 11.25'

Using a Whisker Pole

The first thing we learned is to get a bigger whisker pole. Papoose is 36 feet with a #1 jib of about 400 square feet and a J of 13.5 feet. The first pole was long enough but not strong enough and ended up bent in a complete C …

According to the link below, PHRF of the Chesapeake limits whisker pole length to "J" for non spinaker class. If the pole is adjustable, a red color must be visable when extended beyond the rated length. It seems the max allowed length varies a great deal depending on where you are racing. http://www.phrfchesbay.com/esspec2.pdf

The length is 1.8 metres, which is a critical length, because not only does it pole out the jib nicely, but I am able to tack the jib without removing the pole. Graham has a clip fitting on the outboard end of his pole, in the manner of a spinnacker pole on larger boats.

On 4/1/2012 at 7:57 PM, Monster Mash said: Somewhere in these forums someone came up with a good rule of thumb for whisker pole length vs J measurement. IIRC It was around 115% J. It was probably 150% of J. I use a 20' pole with a 13.5 ft J on a 12-22 pole. We race with it as we sail in a non-spinnaker class.
