Mystery Behind The Wide Tires in Racing Cars! A Tire’s width can influence many aspects of a race car. A wide tire covers more surface area and divides the car’s weight across a large extent, thus contributing to the vehicle’s lightweight while driving. A wide tire provides a better grip and leans to the perfect angle to maximize the car’s speed.

Wider tires provide more resistance to slippery spots or grit on the road. Race tracks have gravel, dust, rubber beads and oil on them in spots that limit traction. By covering a larger width, the tires can handle small problems like …

Why do racing car tires have larger sizes of tires? - Quora

Wide tires are more susceptible to uneven wear due to alignment or suspension wear. Less bump steer. When you clip a stone with the edge of a wide tread it can twist the steering momentarily. This makes the drive more “nervous” on a rough surface. Less camber sensitivity. With a wide tread, camber has to be set carefully within a narrow range. That

Adhesion is a function of the width of the tire. The wider the tire, the better the adhesion, leading to better braking, cornering and acceleration. Limits to the tire width include weight and distortion at high speeds. 331 views View upvotes Related Answer Quora User , M.A. History and Political Science, University of Sydney (1997)

Incidentally, the reason wide tires help with traction in drag racing is because the material that the tire is made out of adheres to the ground, creating a forced friction, and this does increase with surface area. The drivers spin their tires to heat them up to increase this adhesion effect. 2 Continue this thread level 1 · 10y

Generally, racing tires are low and wide because if you have a larger centre of mass (no gravity) and narrower track width, you will need more pressure and not so many tires available inside. You can not move a wheel linearly along the road surface if it is covered by a tire. Why Do Cars Use Wide Tires?

There is another reason for the wider tires. Tires heat up very fast. This is good, for a while. But you do not want them to overheat easily. That would cost you precious time in the pits changing tires! So you put on a wider tire to increase the surface area by which the tire transfers some of it's heat into the pavement.
