The inaugural race took place on October 22, 1965, with Castle Direct driven by Fred Roloson, the first horse to ever cross the line with a time of 2:10.

This former automotive raceway was only in operation from 1948 to 1952. Originally a. 1/3 mile dirt track racing "Big cars", Midgets, and Roadsters, the oval was shortened to 1/4 mile to accomodate stockcar racing. After loosing ticket sales to nearby Dayus Raceway at Howard and McDougal, and encoaching residential development, WMS shutdown in 1952.
