West Georgia Speedway opened a new era in its history on Saturday night and the new promoters were overwhelmed by the support for the new effort. Mayes Massey and Doug Stevens were left without a track to promote at the end of 2020 when the lease on Senoia Raceway was not renewed due to the track being sold.

Sammy Duke, who turned a motocross track in Whitesburg, Ga., into West Georgia Raceway to found the track in 1993, died Friday. He was 85. The stock car driver, motocross racer and professional baseball player is survived by his wife of 58 years, Louise Williams Duke, four children, 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Middle Georgia Raceway The Middle Georgia Raceway was a half-mile paved track that opened in 1966, at the cost of $500,000. During the inaugural race, the Speedy Morelock 200, Richard Petty broke the speed record for half-mile NASCAR tracks. In front of a crowd of 7,500 spectators, Petty hit a top speed of 82.023 miles per hour.
